Kokura: Best Japanese Ramen & Curry in London SE1

Kokura is a Japanese restaurant located at 49 The Cut, London SE1 8LF, United Kingdom, and can be reached by phone at +44 20 7928 1093. Known for its focus on comforting Japanese staples, Kokura has built a reputation around ramen, curry rice, and simple side dishes served in a clean, efficient setting. From the moment guests step inside, the restaurant presents itself as a casual dining spot designed for quick meals as well as relaxed lunches and dinners.

A Japanese Restaurant Rooted in Simplicity

Kokura follows a straightforward approach to Japanese dining. The menu is intentionally compact, allowing the kitchen to concentrate on a focused selection of dishes rather than an overwhelming range of options. This style reflects a common tradition in Japan, where many neighborhood ramen shops and curry houses specialize in doing a few things well.

The atmosphere supports this philosophy. Reviews often mention the clean interior and fast service, making Kokura appealing to diners who value efficiency without sacrificing quality. The dining room feels practical and welcoming, suitable for solo visitors, couples, or small groups looking for reliable Japanese comfort food in central London.

Ramen at the Heart of the Menu

Ramen is central to the Kokura experience. The restaurant offers several variations that cater to different tastes, from rich and savory broths to lighter, plant based options. Tonkotsu Ramen stands out as a popular choice, featuring a creamy pork bone broth that delivers depth and warmth with every spoonful. Chashu Ramen builds on this base with tender slices of braised pork, adding richness and texture.

For those seeking a brighter flavor profile, Yuzu Kara Ramen introduces citrus notes that cut through the broth, creating a refreshing balance. Tofu Miso Ramen provides a vegetarian friendly alternative, combining miso broth with tofu and noodles for a satisfying yet lighter bowl. Each ramen dish is served hot and prepared quickly, aligning with the restaurant’s reputation for fast service.

Curry Rice and Hearty Rice Bowls

Beyond noodles, Kokura places strong emphasis on Japanese curry and rice based meals. Chicken Pork Katsu Curry Rice is a filling option that pairs crispy breaded cutlets with thick, mildly spiced curry sauce. This dish appeals to diners who enjoy bold flavors and generous portions.

Gyudon, a classic Japanese beef bowl, offers a different kind of comfort. Thinly sliced beef is simmered and served over rice, creating a savory and slightly sweet dish that is both simple and deeply satisfying. Chashu Don follows a similar concept, using slow cooked pork instead of beef. These rice bowls showcase Kokura’s ability to deliver hearty meals without unnecessary complexity.

Small Plates and Side Dishes

Side dishes at Kokura complement the main courses and add variety to the dining experience. Karaage Chicken Yuzu Mayo is frequently mentioned as a highlight, combining crispy fried chicken with a tangy yuzu flavored mayonnaise. Pork Gyoza provides a familiar favorite, with pan fried dumplings that are crisp on the outside and juicy inside.

Other additions like Chili Oil and Ramen Soup allow diners to adjust flavors or enjoy smaller bites alongside their main dish. These elements encourage a shared dining style, even within the framework of a small menu.

Desserts and Drinks to Complete the Meal

Kokura also offers a concise dessert selection that reflects modern Japanese influences. The Raindrop Cake stands out for its delicate texture and minimalist presentation, while Green Tea Ice Cream provides a creamy, slightly bitter finish that balances richer main dishes.

The drinks menu includes Sake for those who want a traditional pairing, as well as familiar options like Heineken. Green tea is another common choice, aligning with the restaurant’s Japanese identity and offering a refreshing contrast to savory flavors.

Dining Experience and Customer Perspectives

Customer feedback on Kokura presents a mixed but informative picture. Many diners praise the clean environment, fast service, and the availability of high quality dishes at corresponding prices. These reviews highlight the restaurant’s consistency and efficiency, especially appealing during busy lunch hours.

At the same time, some guests note that certain dishes can taste overly salty or fail to meet expectations. Such experiences underline how personal taste plays a significant role in Japanese cuisine, particularly with strongly seasoned broths and sauces. Despite differing opinions, Kokura continues to attract diners who appreciate its focused menu and straightforward approach.

Why Kokura Appeals to Japanese Food Lovers

Kokura appeals to those seeking a no frills Japanese restaurant centered on ramen and curry. Its small menu reflects confidence in its core offerings, while the quick turnaround and clean setting suit the pace of London life. By combining traditional Japanese dishes with a modern, casual dining style, Kokura has positioned itself as a dependable option for both newcomers to Japanese food and seasoned fans.

For diners looking for a place that values simplicity, speed, and recognizable Japanese flavors, Kokura remains a notable presence on The Cut.

What customers say about us

Santiago Turcio

The ramen was good, especially considering the price. The noodles weren’t particularly flavourful, but for what I paid, it was fair — if the price were higher, I’d probably give it a lower rating. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. The location is convenient, near Waterloo, and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere.

Excellent! Went there on a team's lunch and had ramen and gyoza. Really tasty. The noodle was the right amount of chewy and broth was delicious. Nice place to eat as well.

This ramen restaurant is unreal! The eggs and noodles are cooked perfectly, and the portion is good. The price is fairly reasonable in London. I highly praise this ramen restaurant – it’s probably the best in London. As an Asian and having been to Japan many times , I can say this is really good overall in terms of the quality, portion , and price.

So many things to love about Kokura. Very nice looking from the outside and inside, still casual but very cozy. The prices are great and the menu is nice because it doesn’t have too much on it (specialised) but still has something for everyone! Including dessert! The karaage was perfect! Up there with the others in London like Ippudo and Kanada-Ya. Ramen (chicken) was very tasty! I added a lot of the chilli and I loved it. The egg was really good too. Chicken katsu curry lunch was nice ! Lovely !

Easy-going and delicious! The place is nice, chill, easy-going, comfortable, with a canteen feel but in an almost nostalgic and cozy way. The food is very delicious! Obviously their focus is ramen, and especially for the price you get some top quality bowls (highly recommend marinated egg add-on)! However, do not sleep on their karaage chicken! Crispy, succulent, flavourful!
